Vapour Beauty Elixir Lip Gloss, Siren Lipstick, Solar Translucent Bronzer & Aura Multi-Use Blush Review (and swatches)

Thursday, February 23, 2017

Vapour Organic Beauty is an amazing brand in my opinion, and one of the best organic lines available. With ultra-chic, fashion-forward packaging, and every product containing at least 70% Certified Organic ingredients - the other 30% comprising of natural mineral pigment (no carcinogenic synthetic colours here, thank you very much!), Vapour Beauty is a clean, high-performance line.

They are also of course Cruelty Free, but not vegan due to some shades (not all) containing Carmine, and also some products contain beeswax.

Vapour Beauty is available in Australia from Emporio Organico, and you can shop online or at their flagship store in Sydney (tell them I said hi if you pop in!).

The first product I tried from Vapour was the Soft Focus Foundation (liquid), and the Soft Focus Primer. I still love both, but I'm going to be reviewing the Vapour Elixir Plumping Lip Gloss in Honor & Beguile, Solar Translucent Bronzer in Spicy, Siren Lipstick in Chere & the Aura Classic Multi-Use Blush in Spark.

Vapour Elixir Plumping Lip Gloss in Honor Beguile

Both shades are absolutely beautiful layered over lipstick, or worn on their own.
I love anything in the range of mid-tone rose pinks, berries and mauves, to peachy-pinks (as long as they aren't too peachy), and these shades fit perfectly within that spectrum.

The Vapour Elixir Glosses are high-shine, but completely non-sticky.
They go on smooth and slick - liquid hydration. They keep my lips moisturised all day long, and the colour is translucent, and can be layered for more intense pigment, or worn sheer. I also love to layer these over lipstick, as mentioned, as a no-fuss touch-up throughout the day.

The packaging is just beautiful.
It feels high-quality (as with all Vapour products) and looks chic. Instead of the usual sponge-type doe-foot applicator, these glosses have a very small brush tip. This surprised me at first but I actually really like it. It is smaller than most applicators, which makes precise application a breeze.

I'm absolutely loving these and have been reaching for them daily.

Honor is the prettiest peachy-pink shade, with a very fine shimmer throughout. This isn't the chunky, glittery or frosted lip of your teens; rather, a fine particle that adds higher shine and added dimension to the lips - giving the appearance of a fuller pout.

Beguile is a warm, clear berry mauve. It is a my-lips-but-better shade, creme and high gloss.

Vapour Organic Beauty Siren Lipstick in Chere

I have mentioned on Instagram in the past how much I love the Vapour Lipsticks.
They have an amazing range of modern shades, a creamy formula that is very hydrating to the lips (but not too creamy) and good pigment. The super slim tube is also a huge bonus for me - it takes up virtually no room in my bag, and because the bullet it so slim, it also makes application easy without a mirror.

The shade Chere is a really pretty colour, and one I fell in love with the instant I opened the tube.
It is described as a soft, mauve nude.

Applied lightly, this is an accurate description. But, when you layer it or apply more heavily, the colour is the most unique, gorgeous plummy-mauve-nude, with the slightest silvery, grey undertone.
The shade is quite complex and fascinating to me - don't freak out about that greyish undertone mention - you won't look dead. If I'm wearing this lipstick applied lightly, I'm fine with whatever shade blush in the light to mid tone peaches, pinks and blue-based pinks.

However, if I'm layering it up, I opt for a more plum-toned or deeper rose, mauve toned blush. The effect is absolutely beautiful. This shade would also work really well for more tanned, olive or dark complexions. It is a very flattering, wearable nude that won't make you look washed out, and I love throwing it on if I'm wearing very little other make-up, as it just pulls everything together effortlessly.

Vapour Organic Beauty Solar Translucent Bronzer in Spicy

This is the darkest Vapour Bronzer shade. Now, if you have a much darker skin tone than mine (light to medium), don't dismiss this product just because I can make it work for me. It is absolutely a rich enough shade for more tanned skin tones, but it blends so beautifully that even those with lighter skin tones are able to wear it. Blending is key, and using a light hand.

I don't wear a heavily bronzed look, it isn't the most flattering with my colouring, but to bring warmth and definition into my face, I do like to use a darker, warm bronzer like this for a subtle contour. I tend to just place a little underneath the cheekbones (only at the sides, not bringing it around further forward onto the face), and also underneath the jawline.

There is no shimmer present in the shade Spicy whatsoever (the other options have shimmer), it has a matte, but dewy finish. The colour is a rich, warm deep bronze tone - no orange, or redness, and not at all fake looking. As mentioned above, it blends out beautifully. The Vapour Bronzer is also quite pigmented, so a little goes a long way, but you can definitely layer it up for more intense colour.

I love the stick packaging of Vapour. Not only are the products ultra-sleek in my make-up bag (or handbag), but it is also a really quick, no-mess, no-fuss application method. You can draw the bronzer directly onto the skin for precise application, use a brush or fingertips - whichever you prefer. I personally love drawing it directly onto the skin, then blending out with a brush or my fingertips. It makes it SO quick and easy, and also makes placement a breeze.

Vapour Beauty Aura Classic Multi-Use Blush in Spark

Soft, creamy and with a dewy finish, this blush is fast becoming another favourite.
The shade Spark is the perfect match to the Honor Lip Gloss - a really pretty peachy-pink.
It looks super fresh and natural on the cheeks, and is also creamy enough to be comfortable and last on the lips, but dry enough to be long lasting and not fade on the cheeks. The colour is quite pigmented, blends easily and also builds well. I like to apply cream blush by warming with my fingertips, tapping into the skin then blending with a brush if required.

You can also of course apply it to the skin direct from the stick, if you prefer. I've been wearing this on my lips and cheeks together, for an effortlessly fresh-faced, put-together look, and again the sleek packaging makes it convenient to slide into my bag for touch-ups on the go.

If you want to look fresh-faced, and achieve a glowing 'I woke up like this' look - Spark is your shade.

You can see swatches of all the shades here.

Above, I'm wearing:

I absolutely LOVE all of these products. They perform beautifully, the shades are so beautiful and flattering - and the ingredients are about as clean and safe as you could possibly get!

Vapour Beauty is available in Australia from Emporio Organico

ModiBodi Underwear Review (the underwear every woman needs)

Wednesday, February 22, 2017

I recently wrote a post on what is really in your tampons & pads (why you need to switch, and my Eco-friendly recommendations). In that post, I mentioned Modi Bodi.

ModiBodi is an Australian underwear brand, revolutionising feminine hygiene. With underwear that looks, feels and wears just like regular underwear - with one big difference. The ModiBodi underwear feature a built-in liner - able to be used as a back-up with a tampon, cup or liner (leak-proof), or even in place of, depending on the absorbency option selected and your flow. They are available in Air (moisture-wicking), Super Light Absorbency, Light and Medium absorbency, with a Heavy option coming later this year.

When ModiBodi reached out to me, I was instantly hooked by the idea behind the product (what woman or girl doesn't want a more practical, fail-safe - not to mention pretty - solution to periods, LBL or moisture?) While I'm mostly speaking about these as use for your period, ModiBodi underwear is also perfect for keeping you fresh and comfortable through sweat, odour, discharge, light bladder spots/leaks, menstrual onset/spotting, menstrual flow, or breast milk leaks.

Available in a range of styles and sizes - which start from girls size 10 and go up to a women's size 22.

I received the Classic Boyleg (Light Absorbency), Sensual Boyleg in Rose Pink (Light Absorbency) & Sensual High-Waist Bikini in Black (Moderate Absorbency).

You can shop ModiBodi here

My Thoughts

My first impression of the ModiBodi knickers was how soft they were. They feel SO soft and lovely.
The main fabric is a bamboo and spandex blend, with the liner being Merino and Microfibre, with a waterproof lining. (you can read more about the technology here).

The lace on the Sensual styles is also a really lovely soft lace, and feels really good quality.
I've also found all of the styles to be very comfortable and the fit good - there's no riding up, tight spots etc. These are actually so comfortable, I can see why some reviewers are saying they've replaced ALL of their underwear to ModiBodi's. The lining is also very thin (3mm!!) and extremely comfortable.

I also love how pretty the Sensual styles are - you can still feel sexy and have something a bit chic without compromising on comfort or practicality. My only negative - I wish that there was more options in the Moderate Absorbency, because I love the Rose Pink (isn't it pretty?).

Sizing: I was recommended to select a size up from my regular dress size, and found this to be a good fit.

This will obviously depend on your individual flow, as to how you can use / wear the ModiBodi underwear.

I tested these out without a pad, liner or tampon in the Moderate Absorbency, and I had no issues whatsoever. I can wear them all day or night without having to worry about leaks etc, and they are super comfortable. I think unless you have a heavy flow, you will be able to replace all other products with these. I wore them alone with no problems at all.

I do hear, however, that the Heavy Absorbency option will be better suited to those with a heavier flow, or overnight use, so stay tuned for release details! (UPDATE: Just launched for pre-order here!!)

Due to the position of the lining in the Light Absorbency (it sits quite low at the front), they would be good for using with a liner, cup or tampon as a back-up, or for light spotting etc. They wouldn't be good on their own during your period because of the lining placement.

Washing is super easy, just rinse or soak over night in cold water, then cold wash as per usual (I use a lingerie bag to protect anything delicate or with lace or trims) and line dry.

I think ModiBodi is a great brand with a brilliant product. Anything that can make that time of the month not only healthier for your body and the environment, but also more convenient, comfortable and stress-free is a winner in my opinion. These are the best thing out when it comes to periods IMO, and wish I'd discovered them years ago. I've already ordered myself more!! I seriously cannot recommend them enough.

I also love that they offer girls sizes - because they DO look and feel just like regular underwear, but with the protection of a pad or tampon, it is going to make a time that is awkward for most young girls less so!

The Organified Beauty Box - A Certified Organic Subscription Box

Sunday, February 19, 2017

Going organic and/or natural can be tricky. How do you know which brands are 'safe', and which brands aren't? It can also be difficult finding brands and products that work for you - all over again.
Enter: The Organified Beauty Box.

A quarterly subscription box (Australian - YIPEE!!), that contains only certified organic products, so you need not worry about whether or not the ingredients are truly clean!  Each box comprises of 1-3 full size beauty products + 3-5 deluxe sample sizes, depending on the option you choose.

Each box is also a complete surprise - so apart from knowing that the box is 100% Certified Organic, until it arrives on your doorstep, you won't know what it contains. Which is like a fun surprise gift-to-yourself arriving each season!

I love the idea of subscription boxes, but more often than not find them a little disappointing and over-priced - the more 'affordable' options usually only contain very small (1-2 use) sample sizes, and if lucky, one full-size or travel-sized product - which isn't really enough to test out a product and a get a feel for the brand.

With the Organified Beauty Box, everything is very generously sized. I received the Luxury Box, said to contain 1-3 full sized products, and 3-5 samples.

My box contained 3, technically 4 (if you count the toothbrush) full-sized products, plus a number of sample sizes.

What's in the box:

I received a full-sized Vanessa Megan Lemon & Eucalyptus Foaming Handwash
A full-sized Divine Company Certified Organic Tooth Mousse
A full-sized Zuii Organic Certified Organic Eyeshadow in Black
An Eco Bamboo Toothbrush

And sample sizes of -
Dr Bronner's Castille Soap
Dr Bronner's Certified Organic Hair Creme
Ausganica Certified Organic Lavender Shampoo (deluxe sample size)
Ausganica Certified Organic Lavender Conditioner

My thoughts

I love that the Organified Beauty Box is not solely cosmetics or skincare.
This not only makes it much more useful, but includes items for all the family, and makes the box more suited to anyone looking to go organic - not just those interested in beauty products.

I was also impressed by how well thought-out the box is - some boxes are just a random mish-mash, but these products feel like they are going with a theme. I also love the quality of all the products included and I've been really enjoying everything so far (the tooth mousse and handwash are stand-outs!).

Overall, I'm really impressed by the Organified Beauty Box and think it's great value, and a brilliant way to discover new Certified Organic products, without all the hassle of hunting them down yourself!

What's Really in your Tampons & Pads (and the eco-friendly options you need to know about)

Friday, February 17, 2017

This is a topic a little different than the usual cosmetic & skincare, and one I've been planning to write for a while (I always have a backlog of posts just waiting to be written/published!). This is also one area few women stop to consider when switching over all other products - from household cleaners, to food, make-up and skincare - somehow, we completely forget about the products we use every month, and will continue to use every month, for almost half of our lives.

Considering that your period is something that occurs every month for most women, and the products you use are in contact with the most absorbent area of a woman's body for that entire time, it is pretty scary what most tampons and pads contain.

The materials used in most feminine hygiene products are synthetics like rayon and polyester and non-organic cotton. Cotton is one of the world's most highly sprayed crops, and may also be genetically modified. According the USDA, 94 percent of all the cotton planted in the US is genetically engineered. The cotton and rayon is also then bleached with chlorine, and treated with more synthetic chemicals during processing. The chlorine bleaching creates dioxin, which research suggests can cause endocrine and hormone disruption. The cotton can also contain pesticide residue, which can then be absorbed into the bloodstream.
For so-called hygiene products, they aren't so very clean.
And that is without even pausing to consider the waste disposable feminine hygiene products create each year. The average woman will use up to 16,000 tampons in her lifetime (or equivalent of pads), more if she goes through hormone-replacement therapy - none of which are biodegradable.
Never fear, there are plenty of not only eco-friendly options available, but also health-friendly options that won't expose you to harmful synthetic chemicals, and contributing to landfill once discarded.

TOM Organic Tampons
SHOP: Australia (ships worldwide)

Just like regular tampons, sans the toxic chemicals. TOM Organic offers a range of 100% Certified Organic Cotton pads and tampons. The will biodegrade, making them much more eco-friendly, and the Certified Organic cotton ensures your skin is only coming in contact with pure, natural fibres.

Juju Menstrual Cup
SHOP: Australia (ships worldwide - free shipping within AU)

Made from medical-grade silicone, this cup is reusable, meaning you'll not only save thousands of dollars over your lifetime, but also thousands of products going into landfill. These cups are available in two sizes (based on childbearing history) and can be used by women of all ages. They can also be worn for up to 12hrs and don't leak when inserted correctly - even during vigorous exercise.

Tip: There's some great videos on youtube that can help with insertion, use and removal of menstrual cups. The links below are for a different brand, but they can be applied to any cup:

ModiBodi Underwear

With a look and feel just like regular underwear, ModiBodi revolutionise feminine hygiene.
ModiBodi have a built-in liner, available in three absorbency options (Light and Moderate - and the newly launched Heavy option!), and also with maternity options. You can wear these in conjunction with other products, or wear alone in place of pads or tampons.

They not only save landfill, but you as well! Washing is also easy - just rinse, then cold wash and line dry with the rest of the laundry!

I'm actually going to be posting a review on these very shortly - but I will say, I'm very, very impressed. ModiBodi also offer girls sizes, which I think is brilliant for making a time that is already awkward for most young girls easier!

Tip: Sizing works best if you purchase one size up from your regular dress size.

Reusable Organic Cloth Pad

There are several brands available, including Juju and Hannah Pad, and they are available in a range of sizes. Featuring organic cotton, with a waterproof lining, reusable pads work just like the disposable options - except you rinse/soak in cold water overnight before washing (in cold water) and leave to line dry, ready for re-use!

Reusable Organic Cloth Pads are not only a much healthier option for you, but will also save money and landfill from disposable products.

There are of course many other brands and options available - just make sure to look for 100% Certified Organic Cotton if you're purchasing disposable products, and natural and/or organic materials if opting for reusable products. If you have any questions or thoughts to share, you can leave them in the comments below or over on Instagram.

Deliciously Matcha Chai Latte Recipe (and a discount!)

Monday, February 13, 2017

I absolutely love tea. I'm a total tea-pot and rarely ever touch coffee, so I always enjoy finding new flavours, and fun new ways to create something delicious, with additional health benefits. Enter: Deliciously Matcha.

Matcha is dried, ground green tea leaves, higher in antioxidants that regular black tea, and the nutritional equivalent to 10 cups of regular green tea. Because it is a fine powder, you can also bake with matcha, add it to smoothies, sprinkle over your cereal or yogurt, or of course drink it like regular black tea! My favourite way to have Matcha, is in a Matcha Chai Latte.

The Deliciously Matcha is grown in Japan and stone ground, and available in both a Culinary Grade & Ceremonial Grade Matcha. The colour is so vibrant, and the flavour is intense - you'll only need a half teaspoon if making tea. I'm using the Culinary Grade Matcha.

You can also get 20% off all Matcha - use code MATCHADISCOUNT at Deliciously Matcha.

Matcha Chai Latte Recipe

Serves 3-4
You'll need -
  • 1ltr of full-cream milk (or milk of your choice)
  • 2 level teaspoons of Deliciously Matcha Culinary Grade Matcha
  • 1/2 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp of ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp of freshly, fine grated ginger
  • 3 teaspoons of raw honey, or to taste

Method -

Place all ingredients in a small, high-sided saucepan over a medium heat.
Whisk until the matcha is dissolved. If you don't have a hand-held blender, continue to whisk as the milk heats. Otherwise, once the milk has reached the desired temperature, blitz with a hand-held blender until frothy.

Pour into mugs and enjoy.

You can also refrigerate any left over and serve cold - it's delicious either way!

Hynt Beauty Duet Perfecting Concealer, Encore Pressed Powder, Aria Pure Lipstick & Eye Brow Definer Review | Get the Look

Saturday, February 11, 2017

Hynt Beauty is a brand that was one my radar for a long time. With an impressive list of ingredients not found in Hynt Beauty products, absolutely beautiful packaging (it's all in pink and gold boxes!!) and high-performing products, I couldn't wait to get my hands on them.

Hynt Beauty is not yet currently available in Australia - but before you sigh and pass - you might just want to take note that they do offer FREE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING on orders over $99. Yes, you read that correctly. (shop here). For those in Canada, you can also purchase Hynt Beauty here

Hynt Beauty also offers generous sample sizes, so if you're still unsure by the time you're through reading this, you can test out a few products for a more affordable sum before making the plunge.

What I chose

The Hynt Beauty Duet Perfecting Concealer in LIGHT. This was an obvious choice with all of the other rave-reviews I'd read on it, and concealer is one of those products I am constantly on the hunt to find the next-best.

Hynt Beauty Encore Fine Pressed Powder in NUDE SAND.
Hynt Beauty Eyebrow Definer Cream-to-Powder in TAUPE.
Hynt Beauty Aria Pure Lipstick in PASSION PLUM.

I also received sample sizes of the Lumiere Radiance Boosting Powder, Alto Radiant Blush in Passion Pink and the Sun Prep Broad Spectrum SPF30.

Hynt Beauty Eyebrow Definer Cream-to-Powder in Taupe Review

This colour is the perfect match for my brows. My hair is a natural dark blonde, and my brows are a bit darker than this, but also quite sparse after the arch. For reference, I wear Ecobrow in Marilyn, but after comparing the Hynt Beauty shade Taupe to the Ecobrow, I think could probably where Sharon (EB) instead.

The Hynt Beauty Brow Definer is available in 5 shades, so there is a shade for everyone. Taupe is not too ashy, too red, or too dark, which I can find happens with lighter brow product shades. It really is the perfect balance for dark blondes to light - medium brunettes.

I'm used to using a brush, and prefer it over a pencil, and this Cream-to-Powder brow definer applies quickly and easily. The definition can be very natural or built up to a fuller, bolder brow. Cream to powder is the perfect description of this product. It sets very well and doesn't budge throughout the day - even through a sweaty workout. I also love the compact of this, it is very light and slim, and very quick to whip out and do my brows.

Hynt Beauty Encore Fine Pressed Powder in Nude Sand Review

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you already know my preference for cream or liquid products, and distaste for most powder foundations.

This foundation / powder is absolutely divine. Not only did I maybe squeal a little bit when I opened the package, and found it within a gorgeous black velvet draw-string bag (inside the pink box), and then open up a mirrored compact, complete with sponge and an added cap to keep the sponge and powder separate, but I also fell almost instantly in love with the powder itself.

This foundation is so, so beautiful. It's feather-soft, silky on the skin, never dry, or powdery or cakey. It just looks flawless.

I wear this on bare (but moisturised) skin, and then conceal where necessary on days when I want light coverage and my skin to shine (not as in oily shine - as in star!), over concealer, over a BB Cream or use it as a setting powder over a cream foundation. It is very multi-purpose and looks beautiful applied which ever way. The coverage builds very evenly, and can be worn sheer or built up to a medium coverage. It really does give the skin an air-brushed finish (especially paired with the concealer..more on that in moment).

I also love that this powder is pressed. It means I can throw it in my purse for quick touch-ups on the go, and the fact that it includes a brilliant mirror and sponge only adds to this.

Verdict: IN LOVE.

Hynt Beauty Aria Pure Lipstick in Passion Plum Review

This lipstick really surprised me. The texture of it is so creamy, so hydrating - it is like the loveliest, most moisturising lip balm, but the colour is still SO opaque. It builds really quickly, meaning I can just apply a light layer for colour and hydration, or really layer it on for a full-impact lip.

Again the clever packaging of Hynt comes in to play here - the lipstick itself contains a mirror in the top of the lid, with a plain lip balm concealed beneath! I really loved this - the mirror is actually useful for touching-up if you don't have a mirror on hand, and the balm makes the perfect base to prep your lips.

The colour Passion Plum is a pretty plum with brown undertones. Hynt describe it as a Rosey Brown Nude, which is pretty accurate. I really love this shade for something a little more muted and darker than my regular pink tones, but still a very wearable, all-occasions shade. I've applied it lightly in the photo below, and you can see how pigmented it is already. Layered up, and the colour becomes deeper and more intense.

My only negative with this lipstick - which is actually really annoying to me (but I'm not entirely certain it wasn't the weather) - is that after 2-3 uses, the bullet of the lipstick became loose within the tube, so that it moved and would scrape against the side as I wound it up/down if I didn't move the bullet back after application.

As I said, we were experiencing some very warm weather when I received the product, so I don't know if that was a factor at play, or if it is a packaging issue, or due to the creaminess of the product. I did speak to another girl that owns quite a few shades and she's never had an issue, so it could just be this particular tube. That said, whilst irritating, it isn't a massive issue for me. The product still performs beautifully on the lips, and I love it.

Hynt Beauty Duet Perfecting Concealer in Light Review

I have said this every time I've mentioned this concealer on Instagram - I cannot emphasis enough how pigmented this product is. It absolutely amazed me when I first tried it out. Being impatient to try something the minute I opened the package, it was the concealer. Taking a small amount off the lid and proceeding to apply it to my skin, I was astounded by how far it went.
I am talking a pea-sized amount will be TOO MUCH to use on your whole face. Quite literally, very seriously. I've actually taken half of the product out and re-potted it for my sister, because even with daily use, I highly doubt I will go through it within 12mths.

This concealer is insanely concentrated, highly pigmented and so, so creamy, but sets to a satin finish. It is truly full-coverage.

For use on blemishes, I just spot-conceal with a small brush, feather out the edges with a small, fluffy brush and set with powder (the Encore Powder). I also use this under the eyes, applying with a concealer brush, then patting out with my fingertips. I use the excess to prime / brighten the eye lids. I then set immediately with the Encore Pressed Powder (or any powder) and I have full coverage, no creasing and no settling into fine lines.

You can also use this concealer all over as a foundation. As it is so thick and concentrated, I recommend mixing it with an oil, or moisturiser before applying and to help sheer it out. You can then go back in and cover any remaining blemishes with the concealer.

Tip: Barely tap your brush into the concealer, and always generously remove excess on the lid. If you need to go back in for more, grab product from what you have in the lid, rather than the pot. It will prevent you getting too much at once.

This concealer really is amazing - love, love, love it.

Hynt Beauty Lumiere Radiance Boosting Powder (sample size)

I haven't yet figured out if I like this powder or not. I only have a sample size, so I've been playing around with it. I think it may be my application method, but the jury is still out.

It has a very yellow tint to it, and a pretty shimmer. It can be used as a highlighter, finishing powder, setting under the eyes or mixed with moisturiser or primer for a luminous finish. It is meant to add a luminous glow to the skin, but so far, I just end up with odd texture and a yellow tint. I am going to mix it with a primer or moisturiser next and see how I go, because after how great all the other products are, I really think it's my application letting it down.

Hynt Beauty Alto Radiant Blush in Passion Pink (sample size)

This is a super pretty, natural rose-toned blush. It has a slight shimmer in the pot, but just a fresh, radiant finish on the skin. The powder is very finely milled, very pigmented and very light. I really loved this blush.

Sun Prep Broad Spectrum SPF30 This is not only an incredibly moisturising sunscreen, but can also be used as a primer under make-up. It doesn't leave a greasy residue and no white cast, and feels very light and silky on the skin.

Get the Look

  1. Apply a light layer of the Duet Perfecting Concealer over well-moisturised skin. I use an oil, and applied it immediately after the oil, not giving it much time to sink in, for a more sheer finish.
  2. Apply the Duet Perfecting Concealer under the eyes and spot-conceal any blemishes.
  3. Set under eye area and concealing work immediately with the Encore Fine Pressed Powder.
  4. Apply a light layer of the Encore Fine Pressed Powder all over the face - including eyelids -  avoiding the high points (where you usually highlight) of the face. You can build up the layers if you want more coverage.
  5. Define and fill brows using the Eyebrow Definer Cream-to-Powder
  6. Apply the Alto Radiant Blush to the apples of the cheeks
  7. Use a wet brush to line the upper lashes with the Alima Pure Satin Matte Eyeliner in Black, creating a small flick at the outer corner. As the brush dries, apply a light amount under the lower lash line, fading towards the centre.
  8. Curl lashes and finish with a coat of mascara. I'm wearing the Ere Perez Waterproof Mascara.
  9. Finish with a coat of the Aria Pure Lipstick in Passion Plum.

Voila! That's a super quick, light and easy look (takes all of 10mins), and also my thoughts on Hynt Beauty. Have you ever tried any of the Hynt products? I'd love to know if you've any favourites - I've heard great things about the Hynt Mascara!

Poethique Radiance Boosting Serum Review (and a discount!)

Thursday, February 09, 2017

I'm always excited to discover new, up-and-coming natural skincare brands, so I was thrilled when the lovely Gayatri from Poethique reached out to me. Poethique is a beautiful brand, not only with a focus on 100% natural, effective skincare, but also with an ethical focus. The ingredients are sustainably sourced, the packaging is fully recyclable and for every unit of inaugural line of products that Poethique sell, they donate 1% of sales to 1% for the Planet. 1% for the Planet, supports organizations dedicated to saving our forests, rivers and oceans and to getting toxins out of the environment.

I've been using the Poethique Radiance Boosting Serum every night for the last 5-6wks.
It contains Australian Caviar Lime, rich in alpha hydroxy-acids which gently exfoliate the skin. The blend of Australian Burdekin, Illawarra and Kakadu Plums deliver a boost of free-radical fighting antioxidants and vitamin C. The result is a brighter complexion and smoother skin.

I absolutely love it. Isn't it just so pretty? The metallic copper against the blue label looks so gorgeous sitting on the shelf. The Poethique Radiance Boosting Serum is packaged in a glass jar, with a glass dropper. Droppers are my preferred method for serums and oils, as it makes it so easy to dispense the correct amount of product.

Consistency & Application

The serum has a thin, gel-like texture. It is silky, and smooth on the skin, and absorbs quickly. Once absorbed, I wouldn't even know I had it on - it is that light, and absorbs so fully. I only use 2-3 drops, over a toner, every evening and it is sufficient for my face and neck. I then follow with my other skincare.

It layers beautifully over other products. This isn't a moisturiser, but I did find I could cut back the amount of moisturiser or other oils I was putting on my skin. I didn't experience any oiliness or heaviness, but the first few days (until I adjusted my routine), my pores where looking enlarged in the morning, the way my skin tends to do if I've over-done the moisturising.

Because of the citrus and exfoliation element, I do ensure I rinse my skin in the morning, and only use this in the evening.

With this type of product (an exfoliation, brightening action), I always find it takes a few weeks for me to see results (I always recommend giving any product a full month of two of trialling to see results). I started to notice a difference in my skin around 2-3 weeks. The Poethique Radiance Boosting Serum leaves my skin so smooth (any little dry spots or rough spots were completely gone), and evenly toned. It also helps to reduce and fade marks from blemishes, or any pigmentation. I really do feel it has added an overall radiance to the skin. I also really like using it on the neck & decolletage - my skin looks smoother, more hydrated and fresher overall.

I have really enjoyed using this serum, and it definitely delivers results. My Top 8 Natural Foundations, BB Creams & Primers with SPF

Monday, February 06, 2017

I've had a lot of questions recently about BB Creams, foundations or primers with SPF. As I've often said, I don't actually personally wear sunscreen. I know this is going to shock a lot of people (what about my skin!). I instead opt to avoid the sun during the hottest time of the day (no matter the season), or cover up if I am in the sun anytime other than late in the afternoon or early in the morning. I also know that we have managed to survive for centuries without sunscreen, and as evidenced by my Mum's beautiful, unlined skin, (and she hasn't worn sunscreen in years, either), there are other ways to avoid sun-damage and the accelerated ageing that comes with it.

That said, there are a few great BB Creams, Tinted Moisturisers, Foundations and Primers I've used and loved, that contain natural SPF!

14e Cosmetics Foundation & Sheer Tint
SHOP: Australia (ships worldwide) / USA

Both the 14e Cosmetics Foundation and Sheer Tint have an SPF rating (SPF 23, and SPF10, respectively), a beautiful lightweight finish and offer good coverage. You can find swatches of all the shades in both + my review here.

La Mav Organic Anti-Ageing Mineral Foundation SPF15
SHOP: Australia (use code LIBERTYGREEN to save 10% off your 1st order)

This mineral foundation provides light, medium coverage and a seamless, airbrushed finish when applied over a liquid foundation or BB Cream. With nothing but good-for-skin ingredients and natural minerals, this foundation has broad spectrum SPF of 15, and it's also one of my favourite mineral foundations!
Mukti Tinted Moisturiser with Sunscreen
SHOP: Australia (use code LIBERTYGREEN to save 10% off your 1st order)

Mukti is another brilliant natural brand. This Tinted Moisturiser contains nourishing, hydrating ingredients whilst evening the skin tone, and providing SPF15+. You can wear it alone or under your foundation or powder for added coverage and sun protection.

100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Healthy Foundation
SHOP: Australia (ships worldwide + free shipping within AU)

With medium to full coverage, a smooth, matte finish and SPF20, this foundation is another amazing option. 100% natural, pigmented with only fruits and vegetables, 100% Pure is as healthy and safe as you can get!
ILIA Beauty Sheer Vivid Tinted Moisturiser SPF20
SHOP: USA (FREE shipping worldwide $50+ and it works out better - even with conversion rates - to order from the USA to Australia. Shipping is also SUPER fast (faster than most domestic parcels!) If you can't wait, however, Mecca carries ILIA in AU.)

The ILIA Tinted Moisturiser gives the skin the most gorgeously dewy finish, evens the skin tone, blurring imperfections and balances redness. The coverage is light to light - medium, and you can wear this alone, or underneath a powder or with concealer and other make-up for a complete look.
They also have a great range of shades, and most of the ingredients are Certified Organic.
Hynt Beauty Sun Prep Broad Spectrum SPF30 Sunscreen
SHOP: CA / USA (FREE international shipping $99+)

You can use this on it's own on bare skin as a sunscreen, or as a primer underneath makeup. It is really hydrating, and leaves the skin supple and smooth. The texture is a bit like a lightweight lotion - it absorbs very quickly and doesn't leave the skin greasy or with a white cast.

Josh Rosebrook Nutrient Day Cream Tinted
SHOP: Australia (ships worldwide)

With an SPF30, the Josh Rosebrook Tinted Nutrient Day Cream offers more than sun protection.
While evening the skin tone, blurring imperfections and offering light coverage, the Josh Rosebrook Day Cream moisturises, helps to fight acne, reduce the appearance of age spots, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, soothe redness and calm irritation.
This Day Cream also doubles as a primer for underneath makeup or can be worn on bare skin. It is also available in an untinted option.
Jane Iredale Glow Time BB Cream SPF25
SHOP: Australia
While Jane Iredale's products are not 100% natural, I do consider them a safe and effective option. Jane Iredale does use some synthetic ingredients and naturally sourced, clean silicones, I do believe they are 100% non-toxic, and strive to create the safest, healthiest cosmetics.
If silicones aren't an issue for your skin (they can cause some to breakout), then I also recommend trying the Jane Iredale Glow Time BB Cream. It provides medium to full, matte coverage and is available in a range of shades. It is also very concentrated (pea-size for your whole face), so the one tube will certainly last a year or so with daily use.
You can use this as a full coverage foundation, or sheer it out by applying over well-moisturised skin or mixing with an oil.
I hope you've found an option here that works for you, and if you have any questions you can leave them below or over on Instagram.

Homemade Sausage Roll & Tomato Sauce Recipe

Friday, February 03, 2017

I absolutely love this recipe. It makes a delicious dinner or lunch, is super easy and can be served hot or cold. The crisp, buttery, flaky pastry, soft filling and tomato sauce - you'll never even want another bakery-bought sausage roll again! You can change the flavour and spices depending on what you feel like, or what vegetables you have on hand. These sausage rolls are so simple, you can even get the kids involved!

Delicious Homemade Sausage Roll Recipe

  • 1 x packet of filo pastry
  • Butter, melted, to brush (approx. 200g)

  • 500g beef or pork mince
  • 400g mushrooms
  • 1 x large brown onion, peeled and cut into quarters
  • 2 x celery stalks, broken into pieces
  • 2 x medium carrots
  • 1 x medium zucchini
  • 2 x medium red apples, cut into quarters, cores removed
  • 270g colby cheese

  • 2 x cloves of garlic, crushed
  • 2 x tsp salt
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 cups of breadcrumbs
  • Heaped tsp of whole grain French mustard

You can make the filling up ahead of time, even the night before. Just cover with gladwrap and place in the refrigerator until ready to use. The sausage rolls are delicious either hot, or cold the next day, and they reheat well in the oven. To reheat, simply place on a baking tray lined with paper, and place into a cold oven on 175°C. Heat for 20mins or until a skewer when placed in the middle comes out hot.

Using a food processor with blade attachment, finely chop onion.
Remove onion, finely chop celery. Remove.
Chop the mushrooms into small pieces.

Change the food processor attachment to a small grating blade.
Grate the remaining vegetables, apples and cheese.

Place all the vegetables, apples and cheese into a large baking dish (or anything big enough to mix well in) Add the mince and remaining ingredients (garlic, salt, eggs, breadcrumbs & mustard)
Using your hands, mix everything together. Don’t be afraid to ‘squish’ the mixture a little. This will help it hold together better.

Preheat the oven to 200°C.
Melt the butter.

Brush half the sheet of pastry with melted butter, and fold in half - taking short side to short side.
Place filling in a log shape down one side (the long side), a few centimeters in from the top, bottom and left edges of the pastry. (if you can’t quite picture this, see here)

Fold the top, bottom and left edges of the pastry over the filling, then roll towards the right side. Brush the right edge of the pastry with butter to seal and place on prepared baking tray.

Brush each sausage roll with a little extra butter just before baking.
Cook for 20-25mins or until golden.

You can cut into thirds, or serve in one long sausage roll.

Homemade Tomato Sauce Recipe

  • 1 x large onion, diced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • Pinch of mixed herbs
  • 3 tbsp of red wine vinegar
  • 2 heaped tablespoons of tomato paste
  • 1 x 400g can of tomatoes
  • 4 tsp of rapadura sugar
  • 2 tsp of salt

Place onion, garlic and herbs plus some olive oil into a small, high-sided saucepan over a medium heat. Gently caramelise the onion until it turns translucent. As the onion begins to colour, add the red wine vinegar. Allow to cook for another minute or so before adding the tomato paste. Reduce heat and add the tin of tomatoes, sugar and salt.

Allow to cook for 5 minutes or so, before pureeing with a hand-held blender until smooth. If you don’t have a hand-held blender, you can push the sauce through a fine sieve instead. Place back on the heat and continue to cook over a medium - low heat until the sauce has reduced into a thick, smooth consistency. Once the desired consistency is reached, you can then add a little more salt and sugar to taste, if required. This can just depend upon the season and flavour of the tomatoes.

Serve and enjoy!
