8 Reasons To Make Your Own Sourdough

Wednesday, December 14, 2016

Alongside green beauty, I'm also passionate about health and wellbeing over all, and food to me is a huge part of this. I've been eating a wholefood diet for several years now, which started with removing refined sugar around 9 years ago. "Wholefood" is basically any food it it's most unadulterated form, unprocessed, unrefined and natural.

This includes whole grain flours (freshly ground from the grain), unrefined sugars (raw honey, rapadura, rice malt or maple syrup), whole dairy (that is certified organic, biodynamic or home-grown and raw) and free-range, pasture-raised meat. The easiest way I find to sum up a 'wholefood' diet is like the Paleo diet, without the exclusions (Paleo removes grains, legumes and dairy)

Today I have Sarah from Say Little Hen here to share with you 8 reasons to make your own sourdough - and it's not as complicated as you might think! Sarah also has an E-book, Spelt Sourdough Made Simple which has been especially created for whole-grain spelt (or whole grain wheat) flours. If you want to give making sourdough a whirl, I highly recommend you pop over and check out the e-book!

Until December 26th, you can use code LIBERTYGREEN to save 10% off your purchase of Spelt Sourdough Made Simple

At this busy time of year I find it very grounding to immerse myself into the ritual of making sourdough. As the world rushes on by, sourdough continues to bubble away, doing what it has done for centuries uncounted - turn flour, water and a little salt into the most delicious bread you'll ever taste.

Getting started with sourdough is as easy as 1, 2, 3 - the 1 being add flour to a bowl, 2 adding water and 3 stirring it all together. Nature takes over and does the rest. You're on your way to having a living, bubbling sourdough starter which is the doorway to many wonderful things. There's bread, pancakes, biscuits, muffins, cakes - and even doughnuts and pastries.

But, during this busy time of year, who has time to bake their own bread? You do, in fact. We all do.

That bread is time consuming and kneading something to be avoided are two common myths that must have been created by someone who had never baked a loaf of bread in their life.
True, sourdough can take many hours to make. But all of that time is spent by the bread, not you.

You don't have to be a breadsitter - it's really quite capable of managing on it's own. It's been doing it for centuries, remember?

I fell in love with sourdough baking because of it's simplicity, flavour and the wonderful rhythm of creating it. Mixing ingredients together to later return and find it risen into a beautiful dough - on nothing more than flour and water - is magical. Kneading the dough is relaxing, and getting the loaf out of the oven is exciting.

Baking your own artisan bread doesn't have to be complicated, time consuming or stressful. With simple recipes and basic techniques, it's really very easy and so very enjoyable and rewarding to make your own bread.

In my experience, sourdough is far more flexible and forgiving than yeasted bread. It's ridiculously easy to change up your bread baking routine to suit whatever is happening your life at the time.

Some other reasons you might like to give sourdough baking a go:

  1. You have access to fresh bread whenever you want it
  2. Sourdough would have to be the healthiest of all bread. Grains naturally contain phytic acid, which stops your body being able to absorb most of the vitamins and minerals contained in the flour. The beneficial bacteria in sourdough starter breaks down phytic acid, making the nutrients in the flour available to your body.
  3. Along with breaking down phytic acid, sourdough also breaks down gluten into amino acid, making it easier to digest, which is why many people say they feel better eating sourdough rather than bread made with commercial yeast.
  4. Sourdough also produces lactic acid (which predigests the grain for you) and "eats" a lot of the sugar present in the grain.
  5. Overall sourdough actually makes the nutrients in grains and seeds available to your body, making it obviously more nutritious, satisfying and beneficial
  6. Making your own is far cheaper than buying properly made sourdough from the store or local bakery, particularly when you're using grains such as organic spelt. Plus you also know that it was properly fermented, allowing your body to access all of the benefits outlined above
  7. By changing proving schedules you can control how "sour" your sourdough actually is
  8. I've heard many people say that they can happily eat sourdough, particularly spelt sourdough, without any negative side effects, when processed breads and yeasted products would disagree with them. Many people with gluten sensitivities (not allergies) have also said that they are able to eat and enjoy sourdough.

When I started making sourdough, I'd already been making my own bread for years, using commercial yeast. I never, ever imagined that I would fall in love with sourdough baking so much that I would completely change to making sourdough bread only.

Making sourdough is highly addictive and so rewarding.
Are you ready to give it a go?
I think you'll love it.

John Masters Organics Hair Spray, Volumising Foam + Bourbon Vanilla & Tangerine Hair Texturiser | Review

Monday, December 12, 2016

Finding natural hair styling products that perform equally as well as their conventional counterparts can be a tricky task. I love voluminous waves, and anything that can help give me longer lasting hold, added volume or texture is more than welcome.

100% Non-toxic, Natural, and also using Certified Organic ingredients (where available), John Masters Organics has a good range of hair styling products, hair care and body care. It's a brand I'm surprised I haven't heard more about before now, because everything I have experienced from the line so far has been an utter delight. Truly, you needn't look any further for amazing, all-natural hair styling products!

I'm not one to gush, but I'm going to say it right now - I haven't found a better hairspray than the John Masters Organics Hair Spray. This spray amazed me at first use, and is comparable in performance (and also feel) to any 'regular' hairspray.

I've also been using the John Masters Volumising Foam, and the Bourbon Vanilla & Tangerine Hair Texturiser from Emporio Organico. I also received several samples of the John Masters shampoo, conditioners, body washes and body milks, and I'm going to talk a little more about those below.

Alongside the online store, Emporio Organico has a flagship store and organic in Sydney (Crows Nest), so pop in if you're local or visiting the area! They also carry so much more than just natural beauty products, and also have a wide range of fermented foods, Paleo & GAPS-friendly products, eco-home products (cleaning, storage, cook wear and pretty much anything else you can imagine.

John Masters Bourbon Vanilla & Tangerine Hair Texturiser / Review

Packaged in a sleek amber glass jar, this hair texturiser has a slightly sticky, creamy feel and thick consistency. Designed to add shine, texture and soft, flexible hold, I only need a small amount of product. I've been using this by taking a small amount and spreading through my fingertips, then applying lightly to each section of hair, before heat styling. This cream also works well to smooth down any fly-aways, or shape unruly or wayward strands into place.

I've also applied the Bourbon Vanilla & Tangerine Hair Texturiser using the "scrunch" method - after heat-styling, I'll spread a small amount of product through my hands, then 'scrunch' the curls/waves, all over, adding more product if necessary. It would also work well to texturise and shape shorter styles.

The Bourbon Vanilla & Tangerine Hair Texturiser gives a soft hold and shine to waves and curls, and doesn't feel sticky once applied. It is also nicely moisturising, and helps to protect hair from damage during heat styling. Castor oil smoothes the hair cuticle, while glycerin softens the hair shaft and shea butter adds moisture.

Nearly all of the ingredients are Certified Organic, and you can find a full list of ingredients here.

John Masters Organics Hair Spray / Review

As I mentioned above, the John Masters Organics Hair Spray is hands-down, the best I've used. The hair spray has a very similar feel, finish and texture to a regular aerosol-based hair spray - without the nasty chemicals!

Six organic ingredients suffuse hair with beneficial nutrients while delivering an all-day hold with a light, citrus scent. This hair spray is suitable for all hair types, helps fight frizz and protects against humidity, perfect for styling curly or straight hair, great for daily use and safe for colour-treated hair

A light spray of the John Masters Organics Hair Spray is sufficient to provide lasting hold to waves and curls, and won't weigh down your style or leave it looking product-heavy. I've been using this spray by lightly spraying after setting with hot rollers, and then a light spray on each layer as the rollers are removed, and also a final spray after styling. If I'm using a curling iron, I just spray sections as I go after curling.

The Hair Spray has a really firm hold, but it doesn't leave my hair stiff or knotty, and it works really well with just a small amount. After spraying, I can still gently comb or brush through sections if I need to, so it isn't going to turn you into a lacquer-head.

When a hair spray holds up in the tropical North Queensland Summer heat and humidity, I think you have a winner.

As mentioned above, the Hair Spray uses just seven ingredients, 6 of which are Certified Organic. You can find the full list of ingredients here.

John Masters Organics Volumising Foam / Review

Used alone or paired with the other two products, the John Masters Volumising Foam is an incredibly lightweight foam/mousse, that easily spreads through damp hair and helps to create weightless volume. I find some products can leave even freshly-washed hair looking gunky or greasy, but none of these products have that issue.

I've again only been using a small amount of product for good (lasting) volume. I apply the John Masters Volumising Foam to the roots of damp hair, and then blow-dry. This product is also easily brushable, and doesn't leave my hair feeling stiff or prone to frizz.

The pump makes it easy to dispense and disperse. My favourite way to use this product is on freshly washed hair, and blow-waved and styled into bouncy, voluminous waves! A light spray with the Hair Spray, and I'm good to go.

The Volumising Foam is 100% non-toxic and natural, with 7 Certified Organic ingredients. Find the full ingredients here.

John Masters Organics Shampoo, Body Wash & Body Milk / (my thoughts)

This isn't going to be a full review, as I've only trialled sample sizes of these products, but I'm also really impressed with everything I've tried.

John Masters Organics Spearmint and Meadowsweet Scalp Stimulating Shampoo
This shampoo was so lovely and refreshing to use, as the Spearmint scent enveloped me whilst I massaged my scalp. The scent doesn't really linger in the hair, however, so you don't need to worry about scents clashing with other products. My hair felt so silky and soft after use, but thoroughly clean!
This shampoo was really moisturising for my hair, and again left it feeling silky. This was probably a little heavy for my hair, but it's intended for dry, damaged hair, and or a once-per-week alternative/treatment. My dry ends did feel smoother and softer afterwards, however.
I wasn't sure how it would go for my hair as I don't use a conditioner (it's usually too heavy), but this was probably my favourite so far. It's left my hair feeling perfectly balanced (smooth, soft, silky and clean, but fresh even to the roots!) My hair feels SO good after using this!

John Masters Organics - Geranium and Grapefruit Body Wash
The body washes are an absolute treat to use, they smell amazing and leave my skin feeling soft and moisturised. They also work well to provide a barrier for the skin whilst shaving.

John Masters Organics - Geranium and Grapefruit Body Milk
I'm really loving the Body Milks and am planning to purchase some as a regular moisturiser. They are lightweight, creamy, smell delicious and absorb quickly without leaving any greasy residue.

John Masters Organics - Blood Orange and Vanilla Body Milk
When I used this I kept being told I smelled delicious and like Creaming Soda - I felt pretty delicious, too! The Body Milks work well for anywhere on the body - hands, arms, legs, dry elbows or knees - and leave my skin smooth, soft and hydrated.

Overall (+ a discount)

I really don't think you can go past this line if you're on the hunt for amazing hair care and styling products. The Hair Spray is absolutely a new favourite, as is the Volumising Foam and the Hair Texturiser.

You can shop John Masters Organics at Emporio Organico in Australia, and code WBM10 will save you 10% off your order for a limited time.

Lily Lolo Christmas Collection (Almost Famous) | Get The Look + Review

Friday, December 09, 2016

It's no secret that I love gift sets. Given the choice, I'll almost always purchase a set over single pieces. They come packaged beautifully, and (especially when it comes to cosmetics) the products have been carefully selected to complement one another.

Emporio Organico has an online store, or if you're local to Sydney, you can also pop into their flagship store in Crows Nest!

There are several different sets to choose from, and I opted for the Almost Famous Collection which includes the new Pedal to the Metal Eye Shadow Palette, Mineral Blush in Rosy Apple and Lipstick in Rose Gold.

The Christmas Collections are packaged in the most gorgeous blue and white boxes, ready to be gifted, and perfect for storing things in afterwards! And they are, of course, 100% natural and non-toxic. You can find all of the ingredients listed here, here and here.

Almost Famous Collection / Review

As I mentioned above, this gift set is perfectly curated. The blush and lipstick pair beautifully with the eyeshadow palette to create a perfectly coordinated and flattering look.

I actually wasn't too sure about the shade of lipstick when looking at it in the tube, but it really surprised me once on the lips. Note to self: Always swatch!

Lipstick in Rose Gold

I've found all of the Lily Lolo Lipsticks to be very creamy and moisturising, and this shade is no exception. It is also long-lasting and it fades evenly. I don't find this shade to leave a stain on my lips, but that's typical with lighter colours. As I said above, I really wasn't too sure about the shade in the tube. It appears much more nude than what I usually wear, and almost too peachy.

The shade will of course look different on everyone due to skin tone, lip pigment, colouring etc, but I was pleasantly surprised by how flattering the shade Rose Gold really is. Flattering to the point I think I've found a new favourite shade. It has a very slight shimmer to it, which is something I also usually dislike/avoid. The shimmer is very subtle, however, and merely adds more dimension to the lips, giving the illusion of fuller lips.

Once on, Rose Gold is what I would describe as a nude, rose-gold tone. It does have a peachy undertone, but it is a very flattering shade - and it works very well within this collection.

Mineral Blush in Rosy Apple

In the pot, this blush has a very shimmery finish - almost a sheen as it moves in the light.
The shade is a warm, muted natural burnt-rose tone. It works well on most skin tones, including the very fair. Packaged in a sifter jar, it's easy to dispense the correct amount of product and keep it tidy and safe from spills.

This blush is incredibly lightweight, and VERY pigmented. You need the smallest amount of product, so one jar will quite likely last until expiry! Due to the shimmery/sheen in the pot, I was quite surprised (and pleased) to see that the shimmery effect doesn't transfer to the skin. Not one bit. Even up close. Instead, I was left with a beautiful luminous finish and healthy glow!

I really think this blush is what pulls this entire collection together. The shade is warm enough to work with the nude lip/smokey eye look, but fresh enough to work with lighter, more colourful looks!

Pedal to the Metal Eye Shadow Palette

This palette includes both matte and shimmer shades, in a range of neutrals, metallics (gold, silver & taupey grey) and charcoals. It also includes a great highlight shade.

All of the pressed eyeshadows and light and silky, easy to blend and build, and have good medium - high pigmentation. You can also use all of them wet or dry. Tip: Wet your brush with a setting spray or toner and go over the shimmer shades after application for a metallic finish and more intense colour.

Most of the time, I prefer a more natural look, but sometimes I do want something more dramatic, and this palette accommodates that. The Almost Famous Collection would actually cover almost any look or occasion with just these three products. All of the shades play beautifully together, and offer endless opportunity for experimenting.

I particularly love the shade Hook Up - a matte, light beige (second last), which has a peachy/pink undertone. It makes a gorgeous transition or all-over shade. The shade Pole Position - a matte, soft brown (third from left) is also one of the more neutral/natural shades and makes a pretty crease shade.

I've gone fairly light and natural in the look below, but you can also create more dramatic, smokey-eye looks with this palette.

Get The Look / Almost Famous

Concealer: W3LL People Bio Correct Concealer in Light (eyes)

I think these gift sets are an absolute must-have, and any woman would be thrilled to find this collection under the tree! The Lily Lolo Almost Famous Christmas Collection is also so versatile, you could get away with only owning this plus a few other basics (so perfect for teens also!)
