Hot Christmas Spice Milkshake | Recipe

Wednesday, November 30, 2016

With cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla, this Hot Christmas Spice Milkshake tastes just like Christmas in a cup! A creamy, sweet, spiced treat that is delicious either hot or cold. It is easy to whip up, and doesn't require anything you won't readily have in the pantry. It is absolutely delicious with an after dinner treat or served cold in the afternoon.

The recipe below makes enough for about 4 (generous) or 6 regular mugs, depending on size.
All measurements are metric measurements.

One tsp = 5ml

Ingredients

  • 1/2 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp of ground nutmeg + extra to dust
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 5-8 heaped teaspoons of honey, to taste (just a regular teaspoon, not the 5ml measuring spoon)
  • 2L of full-cream milk

Method

  1. Place milk and all ingredients (except the honey) in a 4L high-sided saucepan, and place over a medium heat. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
  2. Once the milk has begun to warm, add 5 heaped (regular) teaspoons of the honey. Once the honey has dissolved, you can add more to taste.
  3. As the milk begins to near the desired drinking temperature, blend using a stick blender until it froths (if it's not hot enough, it won't form a froth). You'll need a saucepan with enough room to blend the milk without causing it to spill. If you don't have a stick blender, you can use a whisk or hand-held beaters.
  4. Continue to heat until reached desired drinking temperature.
  5. Pour into mugs and sprinkle with extra nutmeg. Serve, and enjoy!

You can refrigerate any extra and simply serve cold, or follow the method below for making an iced Christmas Spice Milkshake.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp of ground nutmeg + extra to dust
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 5-8 heaped teaspoons of honey, to taste (just a regular teaspoon, not the 5ml measuring spoon)
  • 2L of full-cream milk
  • + a little boiling water

Method

  1. Pour about a third of the milk into a blender, milkshake shaker or tall jug (use a stick blender for this)
  2. Place the spices, vanilla and honey in heat-proof jug. Add enough boiling water to dissolve the honey. and stir.
  3. Add the honey and spice mixture to the milk.
  4. Blend until frothy, then gradually add the remaining milk, blending as you go.
  5. Pour into glasses and sprinkle with extra nutmeg.
Enjoy!

Innersense Organic Hair Care Volume Lotion, Pure Harmony Shampoo & Finishing Polish | Review

Tuesday, November 29, 2016

Effective 100% Natural or Certified Organic hair care and styling products can be difficult to find (believe me, I KNOW!). There's a lot of buzz around Innersense Organic Beauty, so I was thrilled when Eve Organics announced they'd be carrying the line in Australia!

Innersense Organic Beauty hair care & styling products are 100% non-toxic, and free from Artifical Colors and Fragrance, DEA, MEA, TEA, or MIPA Compounds, Formaldehyde, Imidazolidinyl and Diazolidinyl Urea, PEGS and PEG Compounds, Petrochemicals, Phthalates (thay-lates), Propylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol and Parabens. Whew. That's quite a list.

Apart from the impressive ingredient list, Innersense Organic Beauty is also professional-quality hair care, and has several products specifically designed for curly hair.

I've been trialling the Innersense Organic Beauty Pure Harmony Hair Bath (Shampoo - travel size shown), Inner Reflection Finishing Polish and I Create Volume Lotion for several weeks now. Continue on to read my thoughts!

To create the look below:

  1. After washing my hair with the Pure Harmony Hair Bath, I applied the I Create Volume Lotion to the roots of my damp hair
  2. I then blow-dried my hair
  3. Styled with hot rollers (or curling iron)
  4. Tousle, and apply a small amount of the Inner Reflection Finishing Polish to the ends
  5. Enjoy your volume!

Review / Pure Harmony Hair Bath

The first thing I noticed about this was how little I needed. You can see the length of my hair below (which isn't that long), and I'll usually use 3-5 pumps of my regular shampoo just to get it all through my hair, whereas I only use about 2 with this. The second was how thoroughly it cleaned my hair. My hair felt cleaner than it had in ages immediately after the first wash.

I wash my hair every single night (I could never get on the wash-it-once-or-twice-a-week bandwagon), and I also haven't used a conditioner in years. I find it too heavy for my hair, and it just weighs it down. With the Innersense Pure Harmony Hair Bath, however, I think in the cooler months (I live in tropical North Queensland, so Spring/Summer are sweltering), I could probably get away with every second wash, because it leaves my hair that clean and fresh.

My hair feels so silky, soft and shiny - but not dry - and after using the Pure Harmony Hair Bath consistently for 2wks, my hair feels better than ever.

If there's one thing I'm always looking for in a hair styling product, it's VOLUME. I've managed to find a few brilliant hair sprays over the years, but until recently, I'd yet to find anything that could give my hair serious volume, without using a tonne of product.

Enter: The Innersense Organic Beauty I Create Volume Lotion

Again, I found I only need the smallest amount of this (around a 50c piece for my hair length) to give my hair some serious volume. I apply it to the roots of damp, freshly washed hair, then blow-dry as per usual. The I Create Volume Lotion gives the hair such a silky feel (not the dry, knotty mess some styling products can create) whilst still damp making styling much easier, and a gorgeous shine once dry. It will depend on your hair type and the style you're after as to how much product you'll need, so just experiment with different amounts, but start small. If you're just after a soft glossiness, use less, and add more for more volume.

My favourite feature of the Volume Lotion? Weightless. It really is absolutely lovely in the hair, and doesn't leave me with that heavy, product-y feel that I usually get (from having to go overboard with the amount of product)

It also lasts a good 24hrs. If I wash my hair, style and blow-dry the evening before, it will still be fresh and voluminous the next afternoon! Some products can end up with my hair feeling limp and greasy after wearing for 12hrs, but this certainly doesn't. Even for something as simple as a pony tail, this product is quickly becoming a fast favourite for amping up any style!

Review / Inner Reflection Finishing Polish

This is a slightly tacky, thick gel-like styling product.
Again, I only need the smallest amount. Less is more.

I'll apply this to just the ends of my hair after heat-styling to add flexible hold and shine. The tackiness disappears once it is applied to the hair, so there is no stickiness or stiffness to worry about!

I also apply this to the ends of damp hair, then style/blow-dry. If I'm using this method, it is best to apply to one section at a time, style, then move onto the next.

When applying to dry hair, I just massage a small amount through my palms, then using a scrunch-type method, apply to the ends of my hair. The Inner Reflection Finishing Polish provides lightweight, brushable, flexible and long-lasting hold, keeping my style perfect all day long. I really love how easy this is to use and the effect it gives. The Finishing Polish can also be used to tame fly-aways or to sculpt short styles. I need so little product, I can't see myself going through this very quickly at all!

Overall

I really love absolutely everything about this line. The shampoo is amazing and the styling products are absolutely brilliant. Further proof you don't need toxic chemicals to have fabulously glamorous hair! You can shop Innersense Organic Beauty here in Australia, and find all of the ingredients here on each individual product.

Alima Pure Holiday Look

Friday, November 18, 2016

I recently reviewed the new Alima Pure Liqiud Silk Foundation, Cream Concealer, Satin Matte Eye Shadows, Luminous Shimmer Eye Shadow and Satin Matte Blush from Emporio Organico, and today I'm sharing one of several looks I'm going to be creating featuring this wonderful brand.

If you want to know more about Alima Pure and my thoughts on each of these products individually, you can read my review here. This post is just going to be all about this simple, but glamorous (green) holiday look. Of course you could wear it for any other occasion, but I always feel if there is any time to bust out a red lip, it's the festive season.

With all of the end-of-year celebrations, work parties, Christmas parties and other general holiday fun, this is the perfect time to mix up your looks, and experiment a little!

This look is fairly simple, but a few details keep it fresh and festive.
I've kept the skin light and clean, a subtle contour (warmth is essential with a red lip!), red lip and rose-gold metallic eye-liner for a fun twist!

How To Create a Holiday Look with Alima Pure

  1. I always prep my (clean, damp) skin with an oil. The RMS Beauty Oil has been what I'm reaching for lately, but any lightweight, fast-absorbing oil will do - Rosehip Oil is ideal.
  2. Warm the Alima Pure Cream Concealer with the fingertips, then apply underneath the eyes. Use the excess to prime the eyelids. Using the Kjaer Weis Foundation Brush, blend out the concealer under and around the eyes.
  3. Conceal any spots, redness or blemishes with the Alima Pure Cream Concealer and Kjaer Weis Foundation Brush, blending the edges out carefully.
  4. Using a barely damp (almost dry) Beauty Blender, apply a small amount (pea-sized) of the Alima Pure Liquid Silk Foundation in Dew directly to the sponge.
  5. Starting in the centre of the face, blend out the product. It is best to work on each area at a time, then add more product as you move to the next. I do from nose to cheek on both sides of the face, then chin, forehead. Then another small amount for blending the jawline, temples, bridge of nose and blending everything together. You can add another layer if you feel you need it in problem areas.
  6. Set everything with a light dusting of powder. I use the RMS Beauty Tinted "Un" Powder.
  7. Taking the contour shade from the Lily Lolo Sculpt & Glow Duo, lightly contour beneath the cheeks and the jawline. I also use this product as a bronzer with a fluffy brush, and lightly dust the bridge of nose, and chin to add warmth to the skin.
  8. Apply the Alima Pure Satin Matte Blush in Pink to the apples of the cheeks.
  9. Apply the W3LL People Bio Brightener Stick (formerly Moonstone Glow) to the tops of the cheekbones, bridge of nose and cupid's bow for a glowing highlight.
  10. Shape, fill and define brows. I used EcoBrow.

For the Eyes

  1. I swept Alima Pure Satin Matte Eyeshadow in Fleur all over the lid as a base.
  2. Taking the Alima Pure Satin Matte Eyeshadow in Bramble, place through the crease and outer V to add depth and definition to the eyes, blending well.
  3. Highlight the centre of the lid, inner corner of the eye and beneath the brow bone with Alima Pure Satin Matte Eyeshadow in Bone.
  4. Taking a wet eyeliner or angled brush, apply the Luminous Shimmer Eyeshadow in Chai to the upper lash line. This adds a sublte glimmer and warmth to the eyes, bringing out the colour of the eyes without being too full-on.
  5. Finish with 2-3 coats of the W3LL People Bio Extreme Mascara

Lips are ILIA Beauty Lipstick in Wild Child.
Hair was set and styled with Innersense Organic Beauty I Create Volume Lotion and Inner Reflection Finishing Polish.

If you have any questions about this look or any of the products used, use the comments below or ask on Instagram. What's your go-to holiday look? Are you planning to try out anything new this holiday season?

5 Ways to Prep Your Skin & Hair For Summer

Tuesday, November 15, 2016

Guest Author Eve from Eve Organics is back, and today she is sharing five tips on how to get your skin and hair ready for summer! If you'd like to see more from Eve and other guest authors, you can find those posts here.

Summer is just around the corner – and with it, the festive season! If you’re anything like me, December is a really busy month (I’m not an early or particularly organised Christmas shopper!), and at this time of year it’s easy to be so focussed on family and friends that we neglect to take care of ourselves. Honestly, it’s easy to neglect taking care of ourselves at any time of year (I’ll be writing a post on self-care, and why it can be so hard, very shortly!).

But with months of cool-weather hibernation behind us, it pays to get our skin and hair ready for the warmer weather, and November is a great month to do this. Read on for my five tips on getting our skin and hair summer-ready!

1. Give your digestive system a kick start (and take advantage of the blooming citrus trees) by incorporating a daily lemon water into your routine

Lemon water has a plethora of health benefits. My parents have been drinking it for as long as I can remember, although it’s only recently made its way onto the health & wellness scene in a big way.

Lemons are a huge source of vitamin C and complex B vitamins, essential for a healthy immune system. Lemon juice also helps to reduce inflammation by lowering the level of uric acid in the joints, and boosts digestion and metabolism by stimulating the liver (this is why it’s best to enjoy it in the mornings before breakfast). As if that wasn’t enough, lemon has mood-boosting aromatherapeutic benefits, increases energy and detoxifies the blood.

Are you ready to give it a go? Always try to use organic lemons, and wash your lemon before use. Then, cut it in half, squeeze out the juice into a mug then pop the half in, and cover with warm-to-hot (not boiling!) water. Enjoy!

2. Start using a weekly deep-conditioning hair treatment

The changing season can wreak havoc on our tresses. I tend to suffer with dandruff when the temperature starts to change, and in the summer my hair can get quite dry (stress can also contribute to both of these things). To combat it, I use a weekly hair & scalp oil to keep my hair healthy. When it feels like it needs a bit more TLC, I increase this to twice a week. Try Captain Blankenship’s Mermaid Hair Oil, or Innersense’s Harmonic Healing Oil. I apply mine to damp hair, and I distribute it onto the scalp then run it through to the ends and leave on for around 30 minutes. If you want an even deeper treatment, you can leave it on overnight and rinse off in the morning. Voila!

3. Switch your daily coffee for a juice or iced tea

I’ll admit that I’m a coffee lover. Before I started university, I couldn’t stand the stuff – then eventually the 8am lectures got the better of me and I started popping in to the campus café to get my morning caffeine fix. It wasn’t long before I loved the taste (funny how that works!), and I still do. The problem is, caffeine is addictive, and in large amounts, it’s not-so-great for our health either. Caffeine increases the level of cortisol in our systems, via its stimulating effect on the central nervous system and adrenal glands. Cortisol is the body’s stress hormone, and caffeine can cause some people to feel anxious as well as alert.

A healthier option (and easier to do in the summer time!) would be an antioxidant-rich green juice or an iced green tea (as long as there isn’t too much caffeine or sugar in it – tea contains caffeine too). Another thing you can do to reduce your caffeine consumption is to simply drink decaffeinated coffee – or at least, less caffeinated coffee. Now when I buy my latte, I ask for it half-decaf – and most cafes will happily do this for you.

4. Invest in a good body scrub

The cool weather can dry skin out just as much as warm weather can – except that when the weather is cool, we usually cover our skin up and skin cells aren’t shed as easily. This can result in dry patches and flakiness (not nice!). We also tend to drink less water in winter, leaving our skin dehydrated and further increasing dryness.

When the weather starts to warm up (and you can stand a few minutes out of the shower!), start using a weekly body scrub to help skin renew itself. My favourites are Black Robin’s Tingly Bits Mint Body Scrub and Romeo + Madden’s Manuka Honey Brown Sugar Scrub.

5. Lighten up your face routine (and make sure you’re taking your makeup off!)

We can get a bit lazy with our skin care in winter – the routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising seems all that much harder when the water (and the bathroom floor!) are freezing. But during the warmer months when we’re sweating more, it’s more important than ever to keep up with your regime to keep the skin clear and avoid clogged pores. Another thing you can do is to start thinking about transitioning to a lighter moisturiser for day-time (not least because you’ll probably be wearing sunscreen with it.) My favourite lightweight moisturisers are Black Robin’s Hippy Hippy Shake Rosehip Moisturiser and Tata Harper’s Rebuilding Moisturiser (particularly good for combination skin that's dehydrated). If you prefer a serum, I love Leahlani’s Champagne Serum for a light finish.

And finally, get out there and enjoy it! There’s nothing better than sunshine to brighten our spirits (and give us a much-needed dose of vitamin D after a cloudy few months!) – so lose the layers and practice some safe sun worship.

Erica Brooke Skincare Emerald Elixir | Review

Sunday, November 13, 2016

Since I first began using the new Erica Brooke Emerald Elixir, I've been dying to share it with you. As I trial all skincare for a minimum of 4-6wks however, I've had to sit tight! Erica Brooke Skincare is an Australian-made-and-owned 100% natural skincare brand. The line is free from parabens, sls, slse, propylene glycol, phthalates, fragrance, harsh alcohols and GMO's, along with any other toxic or harmful ingredients. The products are well-formulated, with the highest quality of ingredients and not wasting space with cheaper, 'filler' ingredients.

You might be more familiar with her natural deodorant cremes, but Erica Brooke Skincare also offers a range of skincare for the face and body.

You can shop the full range here, and International Shipping is also available.

Erica Brooke Skincare Emerald Elixir Review

It may seem like there are a dozen different serums, elixirs and oils on the market, but few I've seen cover as wide a range of issues/concerns as the Emerald Elixir. This hylauronic acid based serum will firm, repair fine lines, hydrate, even skin tone, help fight blemishes, heal scars and reduce redness.

The Emerald Elixir contains - (find the full list of ingredients here)

  • Blue Spirulina aka Blue Majik™ the world's most pure and strongest form of spirulina. A powerful antioxidant which has the ability to quench free radicals and is a potent natural anti inflammatory. It is seriously high in vitamins and minerals.
  • Australian natural caffeine which is fantastic at waking up and plumping up the skin whilst helping to energise and revitalise. It has superior hydrating and anti ageing results compared to most other caffeine extracts on the market because they tend to be synthetic. Not to mention it's full of amazing antioxidants.
  • Niacinamide or B3 is a serious multitasker that is proven to tackle wrinkles, reduce uneven skin tone, help with acne and acne scaring, melasma and hyperpigmentation also improving the surface structure of skin.
  • Tamanu Oil can help with acne and acne scars, eczema, psoriasis, fungus, age spots, general scarring, anti aging and is a great oil for oily skin. It has the "anti army" septic, bacterial, fungal, acne, viral, biotic!
  • Kakadu Plum contains the highest levels of vitamin C found in any natural ingredient, it's incredibly stable and a must have in skincare as it boosts collagen production leading to firmer skin, reduces age spots and scaring, is an anti inflammatory and anti oxidant. The power of vitamin C in skincare becomes even more so when it is used in conjunction with ingredients like B3, green tea and other powerful antioxidants like spirulina and caffeine, they are basically linking arms and creating a stronger and harder working product.
  • Co Enzyme Q10 is the perfect addition because it jump starts energy production within all cells and our skin needs it and we all have this in our bodies but as we age it decreases, so by adding it to our skincare regime is really good thing. Secondly it's a powerful antioxidant, to kick the free radicals butts!

The consistency of this is similar to a thin serum. It is lightweight, silky, pale grey-green in colour, cooling to apply and absorbs quickly. I apply this onto freshly cleansed skin, after dampening the skin with a toner/mist. I always use a facial mist as it helps the product to spread more easily and be more readily absorbed by the skin. I use 1-2 pumps, which is sufficient for my face and neck.

I've been using this serum in the evenings only, alongside an oil (for moisturising, morning + night) still, and a herbal exfoliant (chemical, not manual) every 3-4 nights. Other than that, I've cut everything else from my skincare.

The packaging is really lovely, sleek (takes up so little space!) and lightweight. I like that it has a pump dispenser - due to the consistency I think this works best, and it dispenses the correct amount of product easily. It also looks pretty on the shelf!

The Results

Let me start off by saying that at present, I don't really have any fine lines to worry about. My eyes and the smile lines under those are the only area that I have any lines. That said, I did notice that my eye area feels much more hydrated, and I do believe that the smile lines were lessened a few weeks after I began using this serum.

My skin overall feels plumper, and I do think it feels firmer, although I have experienced more firming from other serums. The Emerald Elixir is has also kept my skin incredibly clear during the time that I've been using it (I was even waiting to have a blemish or something pop up the other week when I was trialling a concealer, haha!). My skin is probably clear 80% of the time due to other skincare that I'm using, but I dropped off just about everything whilst using this. Skin is still clear and radiant - and probably the most even in tone that it has ever been.

Overall

I'm really impressed by the the Emerald Elixir. My skin looks and feels amazing, and this elixir is so silky and lovely! If you are looking for a good, powerful multi-tasker, I highly recommend looking into this elixir.

If you've tried the Erica Brooke Emerald Elixir I'd love to know your thoughts! Have any questions? Leave them below, shoot me an email or get in touch via Instagram.

Dr Brite Whitening Botanical Toothpaste and Teeth Whitening Pen | Review

Thursday, November 10, 2016

What we put into our mouths is equally as important as what you're putting on your skin. Natural dental care options can be difficult to find, with even those marketed as 'natural' can contain Mineral Oil (a petroleum by-product), PEG's, artificial sweeteners or preservatives. Dr Brite dental care products are truly 100% natural, healthy and effective.

For the last few weeks, I've been enjoying the Dr Brite Fluoride Free Whitening Botanical Toothpaste, and Teeth Whitening Pens - both the Peroxide Free and Original in Mint flavours - from Emporio Organico.

The Dr Brite dental care products are not only 100% natural, but also GMO Free, Leaping Bunny Certified and Gluten Free. Many of the ingredients are also Certified Organic.

Dr Brite Teeth Whitening Pen in Mint Peroxide Free

I've seen a lot of teeth whitening products around, and this is probably the only one I've seen that has been created to be so convenient. It is completely mess-free, transportable, and easy to apply.

The Teeth Whitening Pen has a soft tip, and the gel is easily dispensed by the clicker on the opposite end. Application is easy, and I followed the instructions provided here and on the package. It is kind of like brushing your teeth, but without the toothpaste, and takes just 1-2mins.

The mint flavour is really pleasant and not overpowering. I noticed my teeth were whiter within a matter of days, and after using the Peroxide Free Teeth Whitening Pen alongside the toothpaste for two weeks, my teeth are noticeably whiter, and brighter - I've even received several comments. My teeth were fairly white to begin with, and I didn't have any stains, but I was surprised at how much whiter they do look! The other thing that I really love (aside from the ease of use and results), is that there is no sensitivity caused from using the pen.

Dr Brite Original Teeth Whitening Pen in Mint

The original pen contains food-grade hydrogen peroxide. It is recommended that the pens be used up straight away, and as I'm in tropical North Queensland, and the summer heat has already kicked in, I'm storing it in the fridge.

The consistency of the Dr Brite Original Teeth Whitening Pen in Mint is thinner, and clear (in comparision to the Peroxide Free Pen, which is white, and thicker). I didn't find the flavour of this as pleasant as the Peroxide Free Teeth Whitening Pen, but that is due to the hydrogen peroxide. However, the flavour isn't a huge issue, as you aren't really ingesting the gel (smile while it dries, you don't get much flavour).

Original Teeth Whitening Pen in Mint is a stronger product, claiming to be able to lift years worth of stains, and whiten the teeth 2 shades in 2 days. As I mentioned above, my teeth were already fairly white to begin with, but if you want faster or more dramatic results, this would be the one to opt for. Another thing to note is that I noticed a dark brown residue forming at the clicker-end (not the part that goes on your teeth) of the Original Pen. Apparently, this is due to oxidisation and happens over time, so not an issue to worry about. Due to this, however, make sure you keep the pen somewhere where it doesn't matter if this occurs.

Dr Brite Fluoride Free Whitening Botanical Toothpaste

Some natural toothpastes I've tried can have a really strong or unpleasant flavour. The Dr Brite Fluoride Free Whitening Botanical Toothpaste has quite a subtle flavour, and is really pleasant to use. Alongside the pen, this has also been keeping my teeth really white and bright. I trialled both the Teeth Whitening Pen and Toothpaste together for 2 weeks, then just the toothpaste alone for the last 1-2 weeks. The Teeth Whitening Pen is brilliant for that initial whitening of the teeth, but the Botanical Toothpaste alone has also continued to whiten my teeth and keep my smile bright!

Since I began using this toothpaste, my teeth and whole mouth in general feel much fresher and cleaner. The Whitening Botanical Toothpaste uses Activated White Charcoal to naturally whiten your teeth, and Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Green Tea Extract, Menthol and Organic Spearmint Extract to keep your teeth and gums healthy and bright! You can find the full ingredients here.

If you're used to a frothing, foaming toothpaste, you might find it takes some adjustment to this one (or an natural toothpaste) It doesn't froth or foam at all - but don't think that it isn't effective because of this. Many toothpastes contain SLS or other synthetic chemicals which cause them to foam - it does't actually have anything to do with cleaning your teeth.

Overall

I'm really impressed with the results of both the Whitening Botanical Toothpaste and Teeth Whitening Pen, my teeth are looking so white and bright, and feel really fresh and healthy. I didn't  think teeth could look so white without professional whitening or chemical whitening products. I'm happy to have been proved wrong!

Out of the two pens, I personally prefer the Peroxide Free Teeth Whitening Pen, and don't find I need anything stronger. There was also no residue issue with this. The Peroxide-Free Pen has whitened my teeth incredibly already!

The ease of use of the pens make them a convenient option, and the results are almost immediate! The toothpaste is also really effective at whitening, and you need such a small amount, one tube will last quite a considerable time. You can explore the Dr Brite range at Emporio Organico in Australia.
