Toss it Tuesday | Brow Pencils, Gels and Powders

Brows have become somewhat of a beauty trend in the last year or so - and while brows have gone through many different styles over time as beauty looks have changed, big, bold brows are today's "it" look. They frame the face and the eyes, and can alter your look dramatically, depending on how you shape and fill them in. But, have you ever stopped to consider what you are actually putting onto your skin when you reach for your favourite brow pencil?

Let's take a look at some popular brands, and find out exactly what those ingredients mean. Anastasia is one of the most popular brands for brow products, others include Stila, Urban Decay, MAC, Bobbi Brown and NARS. Here's what you'll commonly find in your favourite brow products -

- Parabens
Prefixed with Ethyl, Methyl, Butyl, Propyl, Benzyl these are the most widely used group of cosmetic preservatives. Mimic estrogen in the body and are endocrine (hormone) disruptors. Methylparabens have been found in breast tumours in some studies.

- Phenoxyenthanol
A common cosmetic preservative. Endocrine (hormone) disruptor. Linked to skin irritation, contact dermatitis, also linked to adverse brain and nervous system affects in animal studies.

- BHT
Another preservative, this chemical is an endocrine disruptor and carcinogen.

- Cyclomethicone
A synthetic silicone. Silicones cover the skin like plastic wrap, leaving it unable to breathe and blocks pores. Cycolmethicone is also non-biodegradable and has bio-accumulation, environmental and organ toxicity concerns.

- Parrafin
Derived from petroleum, parafins may be contaminated with xenoestrogenic (false estrogens) polycystic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). They are known to activate estrogen receptors and stimulate MCF-7 breast cancer cell proliferation and are therefore carcinogenic (known to be cancer-causing.)

- Polyethylene
This is the most common form of industrial polymer, used in plastic shopping bags, children's toys, water bottles. Has contamination concerns including heavy metals, 1,4-dioxane (toxic, carcinogenic) and Ethylene oxide (highly toxic).

So before you panic about having to go brow-less if you aren't into subjecting yourself to harmful chemicals, let me share my favourite alternatives - and yes, they do work!

EcoBrow Defining Wax

Whilst not certified organic, EcoBrow is all-natural (the ingredients list might not look it, but do some quick research and you'll find it 100% non-toxic) and my current favourite. Effortlessly fills in, shapes and defines the brow, to your desired fullness. This is often likened to (or called a "dupe" for) the Anastasia Brow Dip Pomade.

W3LL People Capitalist Brow Powder
Australia / USA

I was using this prior to the EcoBrow, and it's an effective, all-mineral product. It is easy to shape and fill the brow with an angled brush, and create the volume you desire. I switched to the EcoBrow over this because I wanted to try something new. This is a great product, and served me well when I was using it.

Lily Lolo Eyebrow Duo

Lily Lolo is one of those brands that I could easily own everything in the line. Their eyebrow duo contains a pressed powder for pigment, and a wax to set, shape and hold the brow. The sleek compact fits easily into your make-up bag, and is perfect for on-the-go travel or touch-ups.

This brow duo is also vegan-friendly.

100% Pure Eyebrow Gel

You can't get any more pure than 100% Pure. This gel comes packaged in a lightweight compact and is easily applied with an angled brush for natural definition and shape. Pigmented with only natural fruits and vegetables, the 100% Pure Eyebrow Gel is also vegan.

Inika Brow Pencil
Australia /

For those that prefer a pencil, Inika Organic is a great option. With a built-in sharpener and a truly blonde shade (natural blondes know the struggle!), you won't miss your old pencils one bit.

Inika is also Certified Organic, Vegan and Cruelty Free.

Ere Perez Natural Almond Eyebrow Pencil

Easy, breezy, one-shade-fits-most, the Ere Perez Eyebrow Pencil is all-natural, PETA Certified and comes with a handy brow brush! Dries to a natural finish to allow you to create naturally defined and shaped brows.
