Toss it Tuesday | Mascara

Mascara can seem like one of the trickier items to replace with a safe alternative that still matches the same standards - but think again. With naturally long lashes and my preference towards cream-based products (most creams are oil-based, and what do we use to remove eye-makeup? Oil.), smudging can be a problem for me, however, choosing the right mascara (or making sure to set with a translucent powder) makes the world of difference and will have you batting your toxin-free lashes in no time!
What's really lurking in your mascara? Regardless of brand, most mascaras contain toxic synthetic preservatives, and other questionable ingredients. Many also contain synthetic fragrance and petroleum-by products.

From popular mainstream brands (think L'Oreal, Revlon, CoverGirl, Maybelline), to luxury brands such as Lancome, Chanel, Dior and YSL, and other popular beauty brands like NARS, Tarte, Urban Decay, MAC & Too Faced, here's what you'll find if you take a peek at that ingredient label:

- Parabens

These usually start with a prefix of butyl, methyl, ethyl, isobutyl, propyl etc.Parabens have been linked to endocrine disruption and allergens in European studies

- Midazolidinyl Urea (Germall II) and Diazolidinyl Urea (Germall 115)

These are the most commonly used preservatives after the parabens. Neither of the Germall chemicals provide good antifungal protection, and must be combined with other preservatives. They release formaldehyde at just over ten degrees. Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen.

Phthalates

This chemical is under growing scientific scrutiny because of high levels found in every woman of reproductive age. Phthalates are suspected of causing birth defects. The European Parliament prohibited the use of the phthalates Di-(2-ethylhexyl) Phthalate (DEHP) and DBP in cosmetics. Phthalates are absorbed through the skin, inhaled and ingested when they leach from plastic containers and contaminate food and water. Animal studies prove that phthalates damage the liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive systems (testes). They also can induce a state of hypersensitivity in the immune system.

My favourite way to quickly check the ingredients of a product? ThinkDirty. Download the app now and start scanning or searching for products. You'll be surprised by what you find!

But this doesn't mean you have to go without gorgeous, luscious lashes.

Nope. You CAN have the same results, without the toxic chemicals. I've rounded up my favourites below.

Best for: Lengthening and definition. Vegan friendly.

The Lily Lolo Mascara is one of the most popular natural mascaras for it's lengthening and volumising abilities. Whilst not quite as volumising as the Ere Perez mascara, the Lily Lolo Natural Mascara gives beautiful length - so you won't miss your old toxic mascaras one bit!

For defined and naturally gorgeous lashes, the rms beauty Defining Mascara is long-lasting, non-clumping and nourishes your lashes. rms beauty also have a Volumising Mascara - tip: layer different formulas for the ultimately volumised and defined lashes, rather than trying to find everything in one formula.
