Little Ondine Nail Polish Review

Monday, November 16, 2015

Copper Spark and Lava
*UPDATE 18/01/16

I've since realised that both Kure Bazaar and RMS Beauty nail polishes contain an ingredient (Benzophenone-1) that has been shown to be hazardous to organs when tested on animals. It is also a known hormone disruptor and has been carcinogenic in lab studies. Whilst I've never personally used either of these brands' nail polishes, I can no longer recommend them as "safe" or "non-toxic". I will be posting a more in-depth lists of brands that do/do not contain this ingredient, along links to articles and studies on Benzophenone-1.

When I first discovered water-based nail polish, I was sceptical.
I mean, would it even work?
I fully expected it to be like the wash-off nail polish you'd have as a child.
My second thought was - what's wrong with "normal" nail polish?

A few hours of research later and I discovered my pretty nail colours were nothing more than chemical cocktails, with ingredients linked to skin allergens, birth defects, organ toxicity, neurological toxicity, and cancer.

Whilst most nail polishes these days are labelled as 3, 5, 7 & 9 free, (the usual ingredients are DPB, Toluene, Camphor, Formaldehyde - a known carcinogen - and Formaldehyde Resin), those 3, 5, 7 or 9 ingredients that have been removed are usually replaced by something new, that is equally as harmful.

There are some brands whose ingredients' score between 1-4 on EWG Skindeep or the ThinkDirty App that don't contain Formaldehyde, DPB or Toluene replacements - RMS Beauty and Kure Bazaar both have gorgeous colour ranges and almost identical ingredients lists.*

As we are exposed to so many synthetic chemicals on a daily basis, I prefer to keep what I am putting on and into my body to a minimum.
"Organic" nail polish doesn't exist, however, water-based polish has much fewer ingredients and fewer chemicals. I've been using water-based polish for several years now, and I was so excited when I discovered the gorgeous new brand, Little Ondine. Their colour range is beautiful, (and they have glitter colours!), and LO customer service was above and beyond my expectations.

I chose the colours Lava (L062), Fusion (L001), Copper Spark (L025) and Golden Rain (L031).

My thoughts on Little Ondine are below, and I also have a discount code for you to save $$ on your order!

Packaging

First impressions count, and packaging for me - especially when it comes to beauty products - is usually quite a large percentage towards my love/like/dislike of a product.

The nail colours arrived in the most adorable black box, each polish boxed individually and included application tips, as well as a loyalty card. I also received a free set of twins!
The individual boxes unfold origami-style to reveal the polish inside, along with tips printed inside the box.
The bottles are also very chic, and the extra length of the bottle cap makes for a very comfortable handle. The brush is firmer than what I've previously experienced, but it makes application a breeze.

Colours

I'm usually either a pastels or a classics (red) girl.
I still had some of my Scotch Naturals nail polish left over, so I opted for two shades of red and two of the glitter colours.

Lava is a rich, sophisticated red that feels immediately chic and pulled-together.
It also has a somewhat festive air - perfect for this time of year!

Fusion is a brighter, bold, classic red. As it is a lighter shade, it has a more summery feel and would be a gorgeous pedi colour, too!

I couldn't resist the glitters, so I chose Copper Spark, over New Year's (Gold), as the Copper didn't appear to be too red, just lovely and warm (its almost a warm gold) and I felt the warmer shade would suit my skin tone better. I applied 3 coats for a full glitter nail.

Golden Rain is glitter particles suspended in a clear polish, so I have simply scattered the polish lightly over my bare nails or colour for a confetti effect. You can also build it up for the full glitter-bomb.

All of the polishes applied smoothly - the colours were fully opaque after just 2 coats, and the glitter colours take only as many coats as the coverage you want. All colours I finished with 2 clear top coats for extra gloss and wear-time (use this as a base coat, too).

Formula, Application & Wear-Time

As mentioned above I use the Secret as a base coat & top-coat to help make my manicure last.

Little Ondine is formulated to peel-off, removing the need for harsh removers, and also making switching up your colour so much easier! Little Ondine also has no odour! Yay for being able to apply anywhere without bothering everyone else with a chemical odour.

The unique peel-off formula also means no chipping.

I always apply nail polish just before bed so that my nails have the longest time possible to dry and cure. Otherwise, Little Ondine recommend keeping nails dry for the first hour, ideally avoiding activities for 3 hours (ie washing hands, showering). The colour is touch-dry under 2mins.

I get at least four days before any signs of wear start to show - as I work with my hands, the tips might starting lifting - usually a quick touch up with an emery board removes the lifting edge and they look as good as new. The wear time does depend on the health of my nails, and if you wear conventional nail polish frequently, allow your nails time to recover and adjust.

If I happen to have a whole nail start to lift/peel (can happen if I'm being particularly rough on my hands), I either just remove and re-paint, or "glue" it back down with a base coat and voilà! You couldn't tell the difference.

Four days without signs of wear is brilliant for me - it was usually three when I wore "conventional" nail polish before the edges would start to chip. I'm usually wanting to change up my colour after a week - Little Ondine's peel-off formula makes it so much easier and faster!

Ingredients

Little Ondine is also Cruelty Free, Vegan, Preservative Free, Fragrance-Free & Pregnancy Friendly.

Aqua (Water) - (Water 55-80% - USED AS A Solvent), Polyurethane-35 - (Resin 20-28% - BINDING), Acrylic Acid/Vp Crosspolymer - (Resin 15-20% - BINDING), Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose - (Resin 5% OR LESS - BINDING), Triethanolamine - (LESS THAN 2% - BUFFERING), Glycerine - (LESS THAN 2% - HUMECTANT & MOISTURISER), Laureth-21 - (1% OR LESS - EMULSIFIER)

And May Contain [+/-]: - (0-4% - VARY PER COLOUR SHADE)

Polyethylene Terephthalate (Glitter), Mica, Ci 11710 (Yellow PIGMENT), Ci 77266 (Black PIGMENT), Ci 74160 (Blue PIGMENT), Ci 77000 (Aluminum POWDER), Ci 77891 (Titanium WHITE)

Golden Rain over Scotch Naturals Morning Glory Fizz

On my wishlist is Zamm, Ripple, and Lilac (its so hard to choose!)
What colours are you dying to try? Have you used water-based polish before?

If you want to try out Little Ondine, use discount code MJ10 at checkout to save 10% off your entire order! The discount code is valid on any order (placed on the UK site) and doesn't expire so you can use it again and again!

Let me know if you try Little Ondine out - I'd love to know your thoughts.

RMS Beauty Essentials

Tuesday, November 10, 2015

RMS Beauty is a cult-favourite brand, adored by make-up artists, super models and everyday girls alike. It is not without good reason - RMS is pure, organic, high performance make-up at its finest.

Created by celebrity make-up artist Rose-Marie Swift, the brands' less-is-more aesthetic goes further than the sleek, minimal packaging.

RMS is about uncovering your skin, your beauty - not covering it up with heavy, cakey make-up.
All of the formulas are light weight, consist of only a handful of ingredients and leave you dewy and fresh-faced.

"RMS Beauty products are formulated with raw, food grade and organic ingredients in their natural state, allowing their living, healing attributes to penetrate and rejuvenate the skin. In their purest form, enzymes, vitamins, antioxidants and their healing properties remain fully intact, encouraging amazing potential for anti-aging effects. RMS Beauty has also taken extreme care in the use of minimal heat in the manufacturing process of this product in order to keep all nutrients and healing properties alive. All RMS Beauty products are free of harmful chemicals, synthetic preservatives, synthetic vitamins, and genetically altered ingredients (GMO) etc. RMS Beauty is full of healing nutrients – nutrients that work synergistically with the skin, and are in harmony with nature and our environment. Each ingredient in RMS Beauty is carefully chosen to create a dialogue with the skin. Your touch activates the life force of the product, and nutrients interact with skin to promote hydration, softness, and luminosity."

The packaging is all either recyclable, biodegradable or reusable.
The frosted glass pots are also so compact that they are the perfect size to keep in your handbag for on-the-go touch-ups and travel.

RMS Beauty Uncover-up (#11)

One of the two most raved about pieces in the line - the RMS Beauty Uncover-up is not just a melt-into-your-skin concealer, but it also doubles as a light - medium coverage foundation.

The colour is somewhat self-adjusting - it appears to have a very yellow base, however, this matches my skin tone perfectly (fair to medium with neutral undertones).

This little gem contains only:

*Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, *Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, *Cera Alba (Beeswax), *Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, *Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopherol(non-GMO), *Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, and may contain:
[+/- Titanium Dioxide CI 77891, Iron Oxides CI 77492, CI 77491, CI 77499]

After prepping my skin, I apply this with the Kjaer Weis Foundation Brush.
I used only my finger-tips for years, and there is no reason you can't - you can still achieve a flawless finish - but after using the Kjaer Weis brush I wouldn't go back. It provides better coverage when applied with a brush, and when using all-over, the finish is seamless.
(NB: for touch-ups I still use my fingers! It blends SO well)

The finish is gorgeously dewy; as a concealer it blends seamlessly with other products, or use as a foundation to minimise pores, balance redness, dark circles and blemishes.

The Un-coverup doesn't crease* and will never look heavy or cakey no matter how much I pack on - again making touch-ups a breeze - I simply have to pat it out and voilà!

It lasts all day (even in the humid Queensland summer heat) and you will still look as fresh-faced at 5pm as you did at 9am. When I want to look fresh-faced in five minutes, the RMS Un-coverup (and the following essentials) are what I reach for.

(NB: I have hooded lids and it will settle into creases on my lids if not properly set, however, it doesn't crease on smile lines, fine lines etc)

RMS Beauty Tinted Un-powder (0-1)

After applying the Uncover-up, the RMS Beauty Tinted Un-powder (shade 0-1) is the next step in my routine.

Feather-light and providing just enough coverage to set the cream products, without feeling dry or taking away from the dewy finish, the Tinted Un-powder contains only Silica, and Iron Oxides: CI 77492, CI 77491, CI 77499.

My skin type is normal, so I need very little and only for the purpose of setting my make-up, however, if you have an oily skin type, don't be afraid to layer on as much as you want - again, this will never become heavy or cakey and it doesn't crease.

I use my W3LL People Kabuki Brush to apply in swirling motions, or I've also used the brush from the ILIA Fade Into You Translucent Powder (after it was empty).

I also use an eyeshadow brush (or even the KW Foundation Brush) to apply all over my lid, and under the eyes.

If the weather is very humid, I can freshen up with a little more powder throughout the day.
Now, I know you would usually apply a finishing/setting powder as the last step in beauty routine, however, I find the RMS products last longer applied in this order.

RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek (Demure)

Demure is a cool-toned pink, that when applied to the cheeks gives a gorgeous flush of colour - not pale enough to be baby-pink, but not warm enough to be a rose-pink (like the flush you get after exercise)

I have also found this colour to reflect differently once on the skin - this is probably one of the most natural cheek colours I've used, and it suits most skin tones - from very fair to warmer, more tanned complexions.

I always apply this after the Tinted Un-powder, as the colour lasts all day, and it keep the dewy-ness at full-scale.

I simply use my Alima Pure Blush Brush to apply - a few taps in the pot, and then I dot it across my cheeks and blend (I really ought to purchase a cream blush brush - I've been eyeing the one by RMS Beauty & Kjaer Weis). You can also use your fingertips, however, I prefer a brush as its less messy, and you get a more flawless finish.

On the lips, the colour is too light for my personal taste as-is, so I'll apply a tinted lip balm or gloss over the top. My lips are naturally very pigmented, so I usually opt for rosy, mauve/pink or red lip colours.

The Lip2Cheek contains:

*Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, *Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, *Cera Alba (Beeswax),*Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Fruit, *Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, *Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, *Buriti (Mauritia Flexuosa) Oil, Tocopherol(non-GMO), Helianthus Annus (Sunflower) seed Oil, Propolis Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract ,*Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, and may contain: [+/- Titanium Dioxide CI 77891, Iron Oxides CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499, Mica CI 77019]

In addition to above ingredient deck, the smile, beloved and curious lip2cheek shades contain the following pigments: [+/- Red 30 CI 73360, Red 6 Lake CI 15850]

RMS Beauty Living Luminzer

This is the second of the top two most raved-about pieces from the RMS Beauty collection.
This magical pot of glow will truly make you look awake - using your fingertips, sweep this across the cheekbones, cupids bow, bridge of the nose, brow bone and inner corner of the eyes, and it will make you look fresh-faced and you will be glowing all day long.

RMS Beauty also suggests a "hint of the luminizer can be added along shoulders, shoulder blades and collar bones for a sexy evening look. Combine with the lip2cheek for a more sensual, shimmery mouth. or mix sparingly with 'un'cover-up for a radiant sheen."

The Living Luminizer contains:

*Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, *Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, *Cera Alba (Beeswax), Tocopherol (non-GMO), *Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, and may contain [+/- Titanium Dioxide CI77891, Mica CI 77019]

RMS Beauty Eye Polish (Lunar)

The Eye Polishes are created to be used sparingly, for a subtle, glossy finish.

Lunar is a neutral, champagne tone.

RMS Beauty says "A veil of sheer metallic hues that gives these unique shadows a glowing, light-reflective finish not seen in traditional eye shadows .... giving them a fashion forward finish that is both flattering and youthful.

These sensual shadows need to be applied very sparingly and worked into the skin like you would a moisturizer. rms beauty eye polishes have all the benefits of raw mineral pigments without the dryness that occurs with minerals alone. rms beauty eye polishes double as an eye cream to nourish and moisturize the eye area, separating them from commercial eye shadows that can accelerate aging and emphasize lines. These shadows work are amazing for dry or aging eyes."

I always ensure to have set my lids with the Tinted Un-powder prior to applying the eye polish - with only my fingertips for a gorgeous gloss of neutral colour.
I've also used this as a highlighter! (it gives a more frosted look)

The Eye Polish contains:

*Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil,*Cera Alba (Beeswax), *Simmondsia Chinesis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, *Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Tocopherol(non-GMO), *Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, and may contain: [+/- Titanium Dioxide CI 77891, Iron Oxides CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499, Mica CI 77019

If you've tried the eye polish before and found it to crease, try again, but with a lighter touch, and don't forget to set it, especially if you have hooded lids.

Wonderlust Vanity Case by Review

RMS Beauty Lip Shine (Sacred)

Like a gloss-meets-lipbalm-lipstick hybrid, the Lip Shine is rich and moisturising, delivering a highly pigmented pop of colour and gorgeous gloss.

Sacred is a pretty poppy pink - not quite red but certainly not hot pink.
It is fresh, bold and youthful without being too 'out-there' for those afraid of bright colours.
You can apply sheerly for a touch of colour or layer on for more intense colour.

The colour will stain your lips for hours, so touch-ups aren't really required and even with daily use the pot will last you months.

The Lip Shine contains:

*Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, *Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, *Buriti (Mauritia Flexuosa) Oil, *Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, *Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, *Cera Alba (Beeswax), Centella Asiatica Extract , *Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Tocopherol(non-GMO) (CI 77491), (CI 77492), (CI 77499), (CI 77891), (CI 77019)

In addition to above ingredient deck, the royal and sacred lip shine shades contain the following pigments: [+/- Red 30 CI 73360, Red 6 Lake CI 15850]

* CERTIFIED ORGANIC
** WILDCRAFTED

There is a reason RMS is part of my must-have essentials - if you are just transitioning to green beauty, updating your make-up bag, or experimenting with beauty, these five little pots of goodness are a fabulous place to start.

Don't forget that Citrine Beauty Bar are also having a SALE on November 13th & 14th. Code CELEBRATE will take $10 off every $100 you spend! xx

Green-washing & How to Avoid It

Wednesday, November 04, 2015

If you're new to green beauty or just starting to make the switch, Green-washing might not be a term you are familiar with.

It is the term we use to describe or categorise brands and products that effectively "green wash" their label.

What is it?

Green-washing, is, to put it simply, an attempt to make a product or brand appear more "green".

An eco-friendly looking label, or perhaps it says it contains naturally derived ingredients, plant extracts, botanicals, or the word 'organic' is splashed somewhere across the label.

It might have a green bottle or illustrations of plants - some go even further and have organic, natural or eco somewhere in the brand name

The problem with (and point of) green-washing is that it deceives consumers into believing that a product is safer, more environmentally friendly or natural.

I don't care if you know and want to use something that isn't 100% natural or organic.

Reality is, it is really possible to avoid synthetic chemicals altogether, so if you want to use a "dirty" mascara on a special occasion or colour your hair - go for it! What I am opposed to is companies purposefully deceiving customers about what their products contain.

There is no law that prevents companies from putting these words on their labels.

Green-washing makes it harder for consumers to decide which product is better, making choosing harder and the genuinely green brands to stand out.

So, how do you avoid it, and how are you supposed to know the difference?

I'm afraid there really isn't a quick, short answer.
As a general rule, 90% of what is available on the supermarket shelves, pharmacies and department stores are full of synthetic chemicals.

Some of the bigger stores are starting to carry some cult-favourites such as RMS Beauty & ILIA, along with other brands such as Burt's Bees & Jane Iredale

Research really is the only answer - sticking to brands with good ethics and those you know and trust, and reading the ingredients label.

Organic certification is also the only way to know if something is really organic.
All certified organic products will carry a certification symbol - from USDA Certified to Australian Certified Organic - there are a few different bodies so the symbol may vary.

But, not everything can be certified organic.

Even after years of using natural, organic and green beauty, I still find it challenging having to research every new product. As a new-comer I know it can be overwhelming - one of the main reasons I began this blog, was to help make the journey a little easier and to save you time researching ingredients, brands and products (and then having to hunt down stockists!)

Apps such as EWG Skindeep App and ThinkDirty make it easier for when you're out and about to quickly scan a barcode or look up a product by name.

These databases are being updated every day, however, there are, of course, many products not yet listed with them.

If you can't find a product with either of these apps, you can also search by ingredient with the EWG Skindeep Database

I've compiled a short-list of some of the worst offenders in the green-washing department below:

- Arbonne
- Bio-Oil
- Josie Maran
- LUSH Cosmetics
- Nivea Pure & Natural
- Organix
- Tarte Cosmetics
- The Body Shop

The Green Beauty Team also complied a more comprehensive list earlier this year. You can read it here.

I also have more resources along with a short-list of ingredients to avoid

Another way to help make the switch easier, and find new products or brands is to find a retailer that you know you can trust. On the Where To Buy page I have a list of one-stop-shops that all have curated collections of wonderful, ethical, green brands.

Unfortunately there aren't too many in Australia, (Beautiful Because is one of my favourites) but they all offer international shipping which is wonderful.

I also have a list of brands that I personally use/have tried, or I recommend.

Speaking of one-stop-shops, one of my favourite international (US based) shops, Citrine Beauty Bar are celebrating the launch of their new (bricks and mortar) store with $10 off every $100 you spend (including online! yay!) November Friday 13th & Saturday 14th. Use code CELEBRATE.

(remember as Citrine is US-based there is about 17hrs time difference, so the code won't be live until Saturday morning Australian-time)

As always, if you have any questions about anything (product suggestions, recommendations, ANYTHING), comment below or email me direct - I'm more than happy to help!
